Materials

Pig iron generally refers to an alloy of iron with a carbon content of 2 to 4.3%. It is also called cast iron. In addition to carbon, pig iron also contains silicon, manganese and a small amount of sulfur, phosphorus, etc. It can be cast but not forged. The carbon in pig iron is in the form of flaky graphite, which has a gray fracture and is usually called gray iron. Because of the soft graphite, with lubrication, thus casting pig iron has good cutting, wear resistance and casting properties. But its tensile strength is not enough, so it can not be forged, can only be used for the manufacture of a variety of castings, such as casting a variety of machine tool bed, iron pipe, etc..
Pig iron is the most basic raw material for casting, for a long time the quality control of casting pig iron often remains at the level of chemical composition.
